PartnerRe Women’s 5K – 2002

Record field of 302 women for PartnerRe 5K 2002

Track star Ashley Couper powered her way through a record field of competitors to win the Fifth Annual PartnerRe Women’s 5K on October 13. The 24-year-old Bermudian finished in a time of 19:10. Victoria Fiddick won the second place prize in a time of 20:35, with Maria Conroy-Hadon the third-prize winner in 21:38. Anna Eatherley, winner of three of the four past years’ races and current record-holder (18:26 in 2000), crossed the line second in 19:38. Because she was part of a family team with her daughter Rebeccca, 7, she did not qualify for individual honours this year.

A record total of 302 female runners and walkers took part in the charity race, which raised $9,800 for TB Cancer & Health Association's new resource centre, due to open in June, 2003. Sponsored by PartnerRe and organised by Mid-Atlantic Athletic Club, the event is the island’s only all-women race. Supporting sponsors include Strands, C-Travel, Stefanel, The Body Shop, Miles Market, Little Venice Group, Ja’Nauzi’s, Med Tech, Barritt’s and Sportseller.

Age group winners included Denise Caruso in the 16 to 29 category; Inge Mesna in the 30 to 39 group; Zina Jones in the 40 to 49 year-olds, and Peggy Couper (Ashley’s Mom) in the 50-plus category. In the junior girls’ 3.2K race, Amber Farrington won the under-11 category, while Ellen Briers was first among 11 to 13-year-olds. Power-walker Jean Gardner won the 5K walking event on the same course with a first-place finish for the third straight year, followed by Anya Hawkes and Jane Christie. In the family run team category, Danielle and Sarah Farrington won the 5K/5K event, while Lynn and Laura Norman won the 5K/3.2K category.
