Women Helping Women

In 2011, all entry fee proceeds (matched by our title sponsor PartnerRe Ltd.) will go directly to Bermuda Heart Foundation (BHF).    BHF was formed in March 1992. Their mission is to strengthen the heartbeat of Bermuda by advocating change through awareness, prevention and education; promoting prevention and recovery through innovative hands on therapy and playing a leading role in the fight against heart disease in Bermuda.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Bermuda. Cardiovascular disease affects 1 in 3 people on the island. However, these figures do not include the number of Bermudians currently at risk for heart disease. Risk factors include obesity, diabetes and hypertension. A recent study shows that 64% of the population is currently affected with these risk factors.

One third of all women will die from heart disease. More recently, it has been noted a disturbing trend of heart disease striking younger aged women 35 to 54 years.  BHF educates women that symptoms of heart disease are often milder, requiring each woman to advocate for herself to receive life-saving care.

Your support of BHF will be used to put on and promote Heart Month in February 2012 which will be themed “A WOMANS HEART”.  Heart Month will be full of different events and activities in the community such as healthy cooking classes, blood pressure/sugar screenings, lunch and learn presentations, physical activity workshops, and seminars with health experts. Through Heart Month 2012 BHF will continue to spread awareness of the number one killer of mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives.

The event has given women in Bermuda the opportunity to support relevant and important causes:
